Symposia Series for Quails and Partridges

The two symposia series included in this conference were initiated during the 1970s when declining populations of a number of species of popular gamebirds associated with agricultural ecosystems began to concern biologists. The quail symposium series began as a "National Quail Symposium," whereas the perdix series started life as a conference concerned with the Hungarian (or now better know as gray or grey) partridge in North America. The latter species was a center of another conference series that started informally in the 1960s in Europe, and those were merged in 1992 during a conference on partridges, quails, and francolins held at The Game Conservancy Trust. That series has since been held in Europe. This one time merging of these conferences is intended to bring together gamebird biologists who share a common passion for these dynamic species.

The following is a complete listing of the conferences. We have included PDF copies of those "gray literature" conferences which are often hard to obtain over time. In some cases we could not obtain the proceedings or there were potential copyright issues therefore not all proceedings are included. Anyone who might have access to older proceedings and/or grant permission for copyrighted material, please feel free to provide a pdf copy we can include here.

Selected papers from Perdix X are being published in the new Open Access Journal Wildlife Biology in Practice edited by Jose Vingada and Carlos Fonseca and published by the Portugal Wildlife Society. Volume 1 in two parts [with two papers from Perdix X] appeared in 2005 and the first part of Volume 2 will appear in June 2006.

For reasons outside control of those involved in organizing Perdix conferences the symposium proceedings have not yet been published. However prior to the meeting The World Pheasant Association and the Provincia di Udine Assessorato Caccia e Pesca jointly issued a 64 page volume of abstracts entitled Managing Partridges and other Game in the Agricultural Landscape.
