Pygmy Hippos in West Africa

Project Summary

The pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis) is a unique and rare species found in only four countries in West Africa: Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia and Cote d’Ivoire. It is listed as endangered (IUCN 2007), and is the only living species of its genus. Pygmy hippos share some superficial similarities with their relatives, the common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibious), but they differ in a number of important life history characteristics.
